G. ROWBERRY & SONS

an ANAGRAM

When we took on 37 Commercial Street we were so inspired by the original shopfront letters that were still in place, we had to keep them. The name SENSORY & RYE is a (part) anagram of the name of the original proprietors of this building G. ROWBERRY & SONS.

Many Herefordians will know and remember the family run butcher G. Rowberry & Sons that closed shop about 16 years ago (so we have been told). The 1890 directory records already show this building occupied by Rowberry as a butcher. We have found archive images showing the amazing shopfront lettering in the mid 1960's (see above) but the commercial directory of Hereford states George Rowberry took this business as far back as 1928, so the letters G. ROWBERRY & SONS could be even older.
